Color in Interior Decoration
Colors are selected for a home both to set the mood inside a room and for their visual effect on the dimensions of the room, specifically its size. Bright colors always appear to be active and stimulating while soft or neutral tones promote relaxation and rest. Customarily, neutral tones are applied in large areas such as walls, ceilings, or floors while bright ones are applied in small pieces such as furniture sets, or room decors. Vivid colors are highly suitable to be used as accents for miniature items such as centerpieces, vases, or throw pillows.
Dark tones create an ambience of masculinity while pastel tones create femininity. That is why dark tones are preferably used in boy’s rooms while pastel tones are used in girl’s rooms. Colors that have a warm effect such as orange and yellow make a room jollier and livelier compared with cool ones such as blue and green.
Dark walls make a room seem more compact while light ones make it look more spacious. These effects of color can be used to achieve balance and to enhance the proportions of a room. For an instance, very high ceilings will appear to be lower than they really are if they will be painted with a color that is darker than the walls. Door and windows tend to make a wall appear smaller that is why carefully choosing the colors for these two can be beneficial in the appearance of a whole wall. Dark paints used for doors and windows can make the wall appear smaller while light colors can counteract the effect.
The position of the source of light and the amount of light the room receives should also be considered in choosing the room color. Sunshine warms colors while cool colors in a room with no sunlight will make it appear desolate. If a specific room do not have a light source that can provide ample radiance, the walls should be painted with light or pale tones because shadows will make the color to be darker than it really is.
